1. What is address format, and why is it important?
Information is usually presented in a standard format, which may vary from country to country. Technically, it is a collection of data that points to a physical destination. Shipping personnel is trained to read and understand shipping information, so if you have questions, you’d better ask them for help. Information usually includes:
- Recipient name
- Apartment or house number
- Street name
- The name of the city
- Region or state
- Postal Code
- Name of country
When a package is sent, its delivery depends entirely on its shipping details. It’s not hard to understand that it may end up in the wrong place if it has any errors, or it may be returned to you (at your expense). For this reason, the correct handling of a package is crucial to the delivery of your shipment.
2. How to address a package?
Handling a package is a simple matter, as long as you know the following.
- Use capital letters.
- Write your address in English.
- No more than five elements.
- Complete return information.
- Do does not include phone or fax numbers as part of the delivery details.
3. How to write an international address?
Order fulfillment is a key process in e-commerce enterprises. But to make sure you do this efficiently, you have to make sure that your shipping details are correct.
It’s not entirely rocket science: if the information on your shipment is incorrect, then the courier company doesn’t know where to send it. For simplicity, most countries use standard address formats, so you should be aware of this.
If you know how to handle a package correctly, you will complete the order successfully. Although address formats are roughly the same around the world, each country has its quirks. Unfortunately, the art of sending packages is not officially taught, and in this age of digital communications, it’s easy to see why you’re at a loss.
However, you can’t ship internationally without the proper format, so we’ll break it down in this handy article.
The international address format is similar to the domestic address in structure. Just pay attention to subtle changes in the arrangement between countries. Taking more time to clarify the correct design can make all the difference when shipping overseas.
In the United Kingdom, for example, it is common (though not necessary) to include a county or metropolitan area before a postcode:
- Andrea Garcia
- 47 Maryville Road
- Reading
- Berkshire
- Rg1AT
- United Kingdom
In France, the postcode precedes the name of the town or city:
- Andrea Garcia
- Apartment 2
- 47 Any Town Street
- 01234 ANYVILLE
- France
In India, it is usually (though not necessary) to include the state before the postcode:
- Andrea Garcia
- 47 Anytown Road
- Chennai
- Tamil Nadu 600 002
- India
The Universal Postal Union, which administers global postal standards, provides a convenient online directory of addresses around the world.
4. How to write a military address?
Military mail is handled through its own dedicated postal channel. Therefore, it is not necessary to list cities or countries in military addresses. You should actively avoid including the names of cities or countries because you don’t want military mail to enter the domestic or foreign postal network.
The military address format is simple. Use the full name and title of the service member, followed by the unit and the apo / FPO number.
Here is an example:
- Kevin Wright
- Box 4190
- Apo AP 96278-2050
Apo stands for the army post office (army and air force facilities), and FPO stands for fleet Post Office (Naval Facilities and ships).
As shown above, the name of apo or FPO is followed by AA = American armed forces; AE = European armed forces; AP = Pacific armed forces.
There is also extended zip code. When sending military mail, please provide the return address on the front of the package.
5. How to get return address format right
This may seem like an extra step, but adding a return address is always a wise idea in the absence of delivery. The mailing address should be in the same format as other domestic addresses in the United States. As follows:
- Andrea Garcia
- 47 anyville road NW 2
- Anytown AZ 01234
Or your country, if you’re sent from abroad. Write the return address on the top left corner of the package or envelope. Although optional, you may want to include a phone number.
Each country has a unique model. You should follow these to ensure that your shipment is delivered correctly. Generally speaking, addresses contain the same information, but different countries may have different writing styles.
The US address format includes the first line of the recipient’s name. After that is the street (house number and street name); after that, you’ll write the city, as well as the two-letter abbreviation of the state and the appropriate zip code.
The last part is the name of the country. If you want to send a package to the United States, package monkey can help you find a courier service to deliver your package to the United States at an affordable price.

Choose the service that suits you best, print your shipping label, and you’re ready to go! Here are the steps to write a US address.
Step 1
There are 50 states in the United States, so when you write a US address, you need to make sure you include the state’s two-letter abbreviations where the town or village is located. Our example shows New York, which is the abbreviation for New York.
If you are unsure what the state abbreviation is, you can refer to the following list of the 50 states in the United States and the corresponding abbreviations.
Step 2
Like the British postcode system, the US address includes a five-digit postcode that must be clearly printed on your package.
A postcode is a postcode used by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to indicate the destination post office or delivery area where letters will be posted for final sorting and delivery. There may be an extension code (zip + 4) in which a hyphen and four other numbers are added to the five-digit code. If you have a complete 9-digit zip code, you can include this, but the first five are usually enough.
Step 3
When you write a US address, the town, state, and zip code should appear on the same line, as shown in the US address example above.
Tips on how to write a US address:
Include the correct state abbreviation and zip code. Write the town, state, and zip code on the same line. There are no commas or periods. Align text to the left. Include your return address.
Use fonts or handwriting that are easy to read and clear. With a pen or ink, you can see clearly the color of the envelope or package. Use our express quotation tool to calculate the correct postage.
Addressing an envelope containing a letter or card addressed to Canada is similar to addressing domestic mail with a few exceptions. Although Canadian addresses share standard features with addresses in the United States, they use a postcode instead of a postcode and require you to list the country name below the mailing address.
The first two lines are similar to the U.S. Postal Service. The first line in the middle of the envelope lists the recipient’s name, just like an envelope sent in the United States. Use the appropriate prefix for the recipient, such as “Mr,” “Ms,” or “Ms,” followed by the person’s first and last name.
Add the recipient’s street address and street name on the next line. The complete address is in capital letters. Canadian. Use the third line of the envelope to fill in the recipient’s city, province, and zip code. After listing cities and spaces, include the corresponding abbreviations for the section.
Canada’s address format is straightforward. In the first line, enter the name of the recipient. The next line blocks the street. On the third line, enter the city, province, and zip code.
The appropriate address format in Australia is similar to that in the United States. The first line is the name of the recipient. The second line contains the apartment or house number and street name.
On the next line, you should write the name of the town or suburb, followed by the abbreviated state name and zip code. On the last line, write the name of the country.
Chinese addresses are very different from other addresses because they have a unique format. In China, they start with the name of the country. The next line contains the name of the province, city, and region.
The third line is followed by a detailed description of the street name, building or community, and apartment number. Finally, the last line should be the name of the recipient.
For addresses in the United Kingdom, the recipient’s name is written on the first line. You will mention the building or apartment number; on the third line, you will note the street or road name and number.
The fourth line should be the name of the city or county, followed by the postcode. Finally, you have to write the name of the country. The fundamental difference between a packet addressing a PO box and a standard package is that you have to write the box number after the recipient’s name, not the recipient’s street address.
After that, you can write the city, state, and zip code as you would in everyday shipping details. The United States starts with the name, followed by the company name (if any). Then, write the unique PO box number, followed by city, state, and country.
For UK PO box addresses, the name is followed by the company name and department. Then the PO box number. Cities are on the next line, followed by zip codes, at the back, and finally by the countryside.
As in other countries, the first line of a Canada Post office box address should be the recipient’s name. The next line has the PO box number and station information.
The next line will have the city, province, and zip code. The last line, of course, should be the state. For the Australian PO box, the recipient’s name should be on the first line, and the company’s name should be on the second line. After that, you can add the PO box number in the third line.
The fourth line should have the suburb, abbreviated state name, and zip code. Then write “Australia” on the last line. The correct address format is fundamental to deliver your shipment correctly.
If the courier company cannot understand the package’s information, your goods will be returned or held.
6. How to write a PO address
Addressing a package to a domestic mailbox is easy. Change street address to PO Box number as follows:

- Anytown AZ 01234
7. How to correctly write an address
Here are five ways to use email address formats correctly for the first time:
Take a moment to verify the address. The online search usually gets the right information. If necessary, please contact the recipient for confirmation in advance.
For overseas addresses, study the standard address format for the country you want to send to. Universal Postal Union provides an online directory international address format.
For military mail, follow the required format carefully and do not accidentally include city or country information. Add return address information to the top left corner of the package or envelope.
Always be as specific as possible to ensure that your package or envelope arrives safely. No matter where you send it in the world, it’s especially important to use the correct postcode.
This tool is another convenient resource for checking domestic addresses.
Also, remember that the ups tagging technology automatically formats address information correctly. However, it is still the responsibility of the sender to enter the exact address.
